'Glee' fashion scoop: Take 'Home' these looks
"Glee's" award-winning costume designer Lou Eyrich had fun outfitting guest star Kristin Chenoweth since her character April has a sassy, larger than life personality. The boozehound came back into Will Schuester's ( Matthew Morrison) life as a roller rink karaoke host who's also the mistress of a wealthy man.
How's that for inspiring? Obviously, a little creativity, vision and whimsicality is essential when shopping for Chenoweth, as is a very good tailor since she's so petite.
Check out some of her looks in "Home."
1) White trench coat - Bebe in Size Zero with pink trim handglued on; 2) Pink nightgown - Betsey Johnson; 3) Faux fur vest - XXI; 4) Denim vest/jeans - Imperial Star (with white lace added because "she's a little too boobalicious"); Denim and gold necklace - Bebe; Denim platforms - Steve Madden; 5) White gown - Aidan Mattox, purchased from Saks
Another character who had some hard truths to face on the episode was Kurt, played by Chris Colfer, who's another joy to dress since he's game to wear anything.
"With Kurt, he's a fashionista, very fashion forward," says Eyrich. "We just like to find unusual pieces that almost make you laugh. He watches Style.com runway for major designers and builds his outfit his own way. He can't afford to buy Alexander McQueen, so his version would mix pieces from J. Crew, H&M and the Gap, but he'll make it fashionable.
"So let's say we find a sailor hat from a costume shop, then add a shirt, a striped tie from J.Crew, vintage pants. The look is very Gaultier, very runway. And we also try to accessorize his simple outfits with a fun hat, an odd bow tie or weird pieces of jewelry."
1) Navy and white shirt - Carpe; Navy ascot - Paul Smith silk with white dog print; White jeans - J. Lindeberg 2) Grey vest with attached suspenders and matching grey pants - Neil Barrett; 3) Plaid jacket - Heritage
Less runway is Quinn, who's played by Dianna Agron. Whereas Kurt seems to wear clothes to express an artistic nature, Quinn's style is muted and less attention-grabbing.
"We don't want to focus on her pregnancy style-wise because the dialog emphasizes that enough," explains Eyrich. "So we chose empire waists to hide her shape as much as possible because she's obviously embarrassed about it, she she tries to cover it up.
"She's really a conservative girl raised in a Republican family and an entitled cheerleader, so she's proud. We keep her look clean, simple, pretty, and feminine. So we choose dresses, ballerina flats, pastels like pale pinks, blues, cream and ribbons. We want to show she's prim and proper even though she's made a mistake.
Eyrich continues, "And she's been wearing a lot of cardigans lately because on the show it's early spring in Ohio, so it's still chilly. That also gives her another layer to cover up her pregnancy, so it tends to be a bit oversizes so she can hide behind it."
Here's Quinn pictured in a dark Moginn dress and Fielel Flower cardigan and then in a J.Crew short-sleeved cream cardigan over a Floreat scallop-edge tiered blouse.
Another cardigan-lover is Artie (Kevin McHale).
"All of Artie's vests and cardigans are vintage rentals and once in a while purchases from J.C. Penney," says Eyrich. "He always wears a Stafford white shirt from J.C. Penney that's wrinkle resistant with every one of his outfits no matter what."
And finally, a few of the guys in Rachel Berry's (Lea Michele) life: Mr. Schuester, Finn (Cory Monteith) and Jesse (Jonathan Groff) have their own simple, but effective pieces.
1) Grey vest - Diesel; 2) Blue vest - American Eagle; 3) White v-neck t-shirt - Diesel
