'Glee' 'Safety Dance': We can dance if we want to
Artie has been confined to a wheelchair for years following a spinal cord injury, but when Bryan Ryan ( Neil Patrick Harris) asks him to write down his greatest dream, Artie scrawls "dancer." Aaaand, our hearts broke.
Kevin McHale, on the other hand, does not have any problems whatsoever moving his dancing feet. (His portrayal of Artie is so realistic that even Oprah was surprised to learn that he can walk.) In Artie's dream sequence, he got up in the middle of the mall and led a flash mob in "Safety Dance," originally by '80s one-hit-wonder Men WIthout Hats.
The flash mob was a nice nod to a craze that's sweeping the world. Joss Whedon's decision to show part of the dance as seen through cell phone cameras and camcorders drove home the tendency of flash mob videos to go viral. In fact, last month a "Glee" flash mob took Seattle by storm with a medley of the show's hits.
Check out the bizarre original Men Without Hats video below... and, as a bonus, one of our favorite clips from "Scrubs" where Turk busts out the Safety Dance.
