'Glee' uses Katie Couric to take another shot at the Lohans
A week ago, there were reports that the show's cast had mended fences with Lindsay Lohan after the show poked fun at her in an episode earlier this season. So, fine. Story over, right?
Nope. On Sunday's (Feb. 6) post-Super Bowl episode -- an episode in which two to three times more people than usually see the show were watching -- "Glee" ripped not Lindsay Lohan, but her mom, Dina. And somehow, the show got CBS News anchor Katie Couric to deliver the blow.
The setup: After Sue's ( Jane Lynch) epic cheerleading stunt fizzled when Quinn ( Dianna Agron), Brittany ( Heather Morris) and Santana ( Naya Rivera) quit the squad, Couric interviewed her. Sue thought she was being named one of the "most fascinating people" (wrong newswoman), but instead Couric was naming her "loser of the year."
Among those Sue beat out for the dishonor: not just Dina Lohan, but also "Sparky Lohan, who is Dina Lohan's dog and also a loser."
So, a couple things with that:
- First: We know Couric is a "Glee" fan, but really? Was a 60-second cameo on the show worth using up a big chunk of your news credibility to take a potshot at Dina Lohan? Seems to me that Couric, or someone on her team, might have thought about that beforehand.
- Isn't going at anyone named Lohan a little too easy at this point?
- Even by the not-always-stringent standards of "Glee" reality, the scene felt a little ... off. We had to rewind and see if the interview was a dream sequence, but apparently not -- which means that we should take at face value that the Cheerios have been defunded, the money has been given to New Directions and Mr. Schue ( Matthew Morrison) is all, Eat it, Sue. We suspect that might come back to bite Will in the butt.
