'Gossip Girl': Diana Payne brings the intrigue back

"Gossip Girl" had no where to go but up after last week's snoozer. And it got just what it needed on Monday (April 9) with the return of Diana Payne ( Elizabeth Hurley). Her arrival kick started the excitement and scheming the show was sorely lacking. Here's a quick recap of the latest shenanigans from the Upper East Side.

[Spoiler Alert]

Diana and Nate ( Chace Crawford) - Ms. Payne is back as an investor in The Spectator. Her first item of business is to demote Nate. This works out well for a few minutes, but ultimately, she realizes how hard he is willing to fight for editorial control of the publication. Diana finally relents, but not before making a few interesting admissions, not least of which is that she still has feelings for him.

Serena ( Blake Lively) and Lola ( Ella Rae Peck) - For the longest time Serena was the object of Gossip Girl. But now that she's in charge of the site, she can re-route the focus to someone else. In this case, Serena looks to make Lola the "It Girl," whether she wants to be or not. For a person who can often be quite drab, this is a fun turn to see the manipulative side of Serena. But how long will it last until she misses being part of the spotlight?

Chuck ( Ed Westwick) and Blair ( Leighton Meester) - It didn't take Chuck long to try to worm his way back into Blair's life. While he tries to keep the news secret that he paid her dowry, thus ending her marriage to Louis, nothing stays a secret long on the Upper East Side. Blair thinks Chuck was just trying to buy love, but he insists he wasn't. Tough to know who to believe.

In related news, Chuck is still trying to figure out who donated the blood to him. This is about as exciting as donating blood yourself. Rufus ( Matthew Settle) and Lily ( Kelly Rutherford) have a bit of a falling out about paying off Ivy. But we're pretty certain this is just a momentary squabble.

Uh oh. Uh oh.
