'Gossip Girl' gaffe: World Trade Center shown in season premiere

It's been ten years since the 9/11 attacks. But in Monday's (Sept. 26) season premiere of " Gossip Girl", the Manhattan skyline has a decidedly pre-2001 look.

In an establishing shot of New York City, the show used cityscape footage featuring the World Trade Center towers (circled). Given the fact that "Gossip Girl" takes place in the present day, that's a major mistake.

Requests to The CW for comment on the footage that made it into the episode have not yet been returned. We'll update you should we hear from the network.

Ever since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, TV shows and movies have deleted scenes featuring the Twin Towers out of respect for those who died in the attacks. For example, shots of the World Trade Center in the films " Zoolander" and " Serendipity" were digitally removed before being released. TV shows including " The Sopranos" and " Sex and the City" modified their opening credits to not show any image of the Twin Towers.
