"Southland" alum Ben McKenzie is set to star in the lead role for the network's Batman-themed drama "Gotham," which has a series commitment.

"Gotham" will tell the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon, here just known at Detective Gordon, and the rogue's gallery that torments Gotham City. The series will include young versions of Bruce Wayne, Alfred, the Riddler, Catwoman, the Joker and the Penguin.

The Gordon we'll meet in "Gotham" is an idealistic rookie detective for the Gotham City Police Department's Homicide Squad, a former college football star and a war hero. In the recent "Dark Knight" trilogy, Commissioner Gordon was famously portrayed by Gary Oldman.

The straight-to-series "Gotham" should debut sometime during the 2014-2015 season.

Do you think McKenzie is a good choice for James Gordon?
