Grammys 2011: Lady Gaga's first 'Born this Way' performance
When a woman shows up in a womb, you start expecting some serious crazy for her performance. However, the egg sort of was the performance. We were expecting typical Gaga madness - maybe an umbilical cord? Some embryonic fluid?
Nope. The egg was pretty much the whole shebang.
Gaga, wearing what we can only assume was a plastic Carmen San Diego costume, just climbed out of the egg like it was a space shuttle and performed the song flanked by backup dancers. Nothing gross happened. The dancers at one point stripped off their costumes to reveal nude bodysuits, but they weren't even sparkly, so we've been there done that with Britney Spears at the 2000 MTV VMAs.
Oh, there were also the prosthetic nubbins affixed to Gaga's shouders, but since we'd already seen those on her single cover, the shock factor was about a zero on the Richter scale.
One thing is undeniable: Gaga can sing. There's no lip syncing for the Lady, even during strenuous dance numbers. We particularly dug the bridge, when she gave the dancers a break and sang her heart out with an organ. That was the only part that didn't sound exactly like Madonna's "Express Yourself."
All in all, "Born This Way" had a pretty tame debut by Gaga standards. Maybe she'd rather the attention be on the love yourself message than the theatrics?
