'Grey's Anatomy': Katherine Heigl not returning, plus finale scoop from Shonda Rhimes
"I've told them I want to," Heigl said. "Being a showrunner and being a writer of a TV series like that is so complicated that, I mean, she's got how many characters on there now? There's a lot and so she's balancing about 40 different story lines, so I don't know if it fits into their sort of vision for this season or next or however many seasons it goes."
Now, executive producer Shonda Rhimes tells fans that a return for Heigl does not, in fact, fit into her vision for the season.
"I think it was really nice to hear her appreciating the show," Rhimes tells TV Guide. "At the same time we are on a track we have been planning. The idea of changing that track is not something we are interested in right now."
As for the potential for other original cast members to leave this year, Rhimes admits that cast members like Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo are currently in negotiations, but says that nothing is confirmed yet.
"I have no idea. I have my fingers crossed. What I think is really lovely is that everybody wants to come back. There's [money] stuff happening. I am [confident], but I have a plan in place for the finale that can occur regardless of who is staying. Our goal is to have Derek and Meredith move in to the completed dream house. And our residents will be interviewing for jobs all around the country."
You hear that, guys? Zola will have a house!
