Holiday shopping turned tragic on Tuesday (Dec. 11) afternoon as an unidentified gunman began shooting in a Portland, OR area shopping mall. Local news reports indicate that at least two people were killed before police could neutralize the suspected shooter.

The Oregonian newspaper reported on its website that the shooting began around 3:30pm at the Clackamas Town Center mall in Happy Valley, a suburb of Portland. The center of the incident may have been either close to the mall's Macy's store or close to the food court.

Witnesses have reported hearing the sound of semi-automatic gunfire, as shoppers either exited the mall or hid inside stores. While there were initially no detailed reports about the shooter, some described a man wearing either camouflage or body armor.

Police managed to contain the situation by 5pm, with a spokesman saying the shooter had been "neutralized." Beyond that, the condition of the gunman remained unknown. Reports indicate that several people were shot, and two deaths have been confirmed, according to the Oregonian. As efforts to clear the mall of shoppers and employees commenced in the evening, the police also announced that they believed there to be only one shooter.

The man's identity and possible motivation also remain unknown.
