'Hannibal' Season 2: Michael Pitt joins series in major role

Michael Pitt, former star of "Boardwalk Empire," has signed on for the major role, which will be introduced late in the series' upcoming second season, Entertainment Weekly reports.

For those unfamiliar with the Verger character, he's an unstable, young, wealthy patient of Dr. Lecter's ( Mads Mikkelsen) who enters into a dangerous cat-and-mouse game with the serial killer. The character was featured in the 2001 "Hannibal" film, based on Thomas Harris' novel of the same name, with an unidentifiable Gary Oldman famously playing an older version of the character.

The series also recently cast Verger's sister Margo, to be played by Canadian actress Katharine Isabelle.

Season 2 of "Hannibal" premieres Friday, Feb. 28 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
