Today is Ice-T's 56th birthday. Since it's not just anyone who can go from a life of crime to huge rap success to a lauded career as an actor, it's time to celebrate.

Born on Feb. 16, 1958 as Tracy Marrow, Ice-T discovered rap while in the military. He also committed a fair number of crimes -- never convicted of criminal activity in his post-military life, Ice-T admitted to theft and drug-dealing many years later.

Then he became a successful rapper. He got a Grammy in 1991, and then -- along with heavy metal band Body Count -- Ice-T pretty much personified controversy with the notorious "Cop Killer."

Warning: The lyrics for this song are extremely NSFW.

The 1992 song from the "Body Count" album pretty much made everyone mad -- especially law enforcement.

Thus, the irony. Although Ice-T has had a successful career in acting for three decades, his most notable role may be as Detective Fin Tutuola in "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." Ice-T has played the role since 2000.

How can we not celebrate a man of such range over 56 years? Happy Birthday Ice-T!
