The cable channel, which recently ordered its first original comedies in more than a decade, had been talking to "Happy Endings" producer Sony about picking up the canceled ABC series. A deal didn't quite come together, though.

Vulture reported Friday night (May 31) that though the two sides were fairly close, a deal appeared "unlikely." Deadline further reported Saturday that USA was concerned the show would need a big marketing push, and it preferred to spend that money on its original shows.

There may yet be a faint glimmer of hope for the show, though, as Vulture says TBS and NBC (really?) are also considering bidding for it.

"Happy Endings" was canceled at the end of this season after averaging 3.8 million viewers and a 1.5 rating among adults 18-49.
