It sounded out of character for NPH (pictured above with his "Hedwig" co-star Lena Hall, director Michael Mayer, left, and producer David Binder, right) and now it turns out it was -- because the rumor is false.

NPH posted a tweet pointing fans to an article from Gossip Cop, who has a source from the performance in question. "The response to the fan yelling was actually done in character -- Neil as Hedwig, not as though Neil stopped the show to respond out of character," says the source.

A rep for Harris adds, "When the fan initially yelled, 'I love you, Neil,' Neil (as Hedwig) then responded, 'Who's Neil? I'm not Neil.' He then looked over at Yitzhak (played by Lena Hall ) and said, 'Are you Neil? You better not be Neil' followed by Hedwig then offering the quote in question," which was, "I'm doing something up here, motherf***er!"

If you've seen either the stage show or the movie, that sounds exactly like how Hedwig would respond in that situation. NPH 1, rumor mill 0.
