hoda-kotb-gi.jpg Hoda Kotb didn't fly to London to help cover the 2012 Summer Olympics on some sort of rescue mission for the "Today" show, says executive producer Jim Bell. The story that Kotb was sent overseas because new co-host Savannah Guthrie wasn't doing well is "complete garbage," Bell says on a radio show.

"Absolute nonsense. That's a garbage story," Bell tells Chris Russo on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio (via the Huffington Post).

"Anybody who watches the show knows that we've been running a thing with Kathie Lee and Hoda for weeks talking about why Hoda should go to the Olympics. So I have no idea. It was pathetic reporting."

The New York Daily News reported that the reason Kotb went to the Games is because the Gurthrie-fronted show isn't performing well and needed a boost in the form of Kotb. "They called Hoda on Thursday begging her to go to London because they said it wasn't working like they thought," a source tells the paper.
