'Homeland's' Mandy Patinkin, Stephen Colbert wed couple on 'The Colbert Report'
When Stephen Colbert heard that one young couple's dream wedding had fallen apart because of the government shutdown, he did what any person with a heart but who is still "100 percent in favor of the shutdown" would do: he offered to marry them on "The Colbert Report."
Engaged couple Mike and MaiLien have been the subject of much media attention because their plan to get married on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial on Oct. 5 was nipped in the bud by the shutdown, so Colbert decided to pull out all the stops and give them the wedding they deserve.
Set against a CGI backdrop of the Jefferson Memorial and replete with bachelor and bachelorette parties, "Homeland" star Mandy Patinkin singing a Jewish prayer (and plugging the Showtime show) and Audra McDonald singing "White Wedding" the best way the Tony-winner could, this "2013 Government Shutdown Wedding of the Century" truly lived up to its name. And since Colbert says he actually is an ordained minister, it seems like this ceremony is legit.
Congrats, Mike and MaiLein!
