'How I Met Your Mother' Season 9: CBS 'optimistic' about an extension

himym-whos-themother.jpg "How I Met Your Mother" is the rare sitcom that is working toward a fixed end point: presumably, finding out how, exactly, Ted (Josh Radnor) meets the mother of his future children.

With its stars under contract only through the end of this upcoming Season 8, the future of the series is now in question. At the Television Critics Association Press Tour on Sunday, CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler confirmed that the network is interested in extending the series into a ninth season.

"They had an incredible year last year and we've got a great relationship with Craig [Thomas] and Carter [Bays] and certainly they have a very strategic wrap-up for the show," she says. "They want it back."

Because they haven't closed a deal with the talent about a ninth season of the show, this season's ending is still up in the air -- despite the fact that Thomas and Bays have previously worked backwards, deciding on a finale before writing the season.

"We're not there yet in terms of resolving the season," Tassler confirms. "We're in early conversations and we're pretty optimistic."

Critics have suggested that "How I Met Your Mother" may be suffering from an aimlessness as it enters its eighth season, but it continues to perform for CBS in the ratings. Fans, do you want to see it go into Season 9, or would you prefer to get some answers this season?
