'How to Live With Your Parents' creator: I still live with my parentsAdd to Favorites | How to Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life)
Series creator Claudia Lonow ("Accidentally on Purpose," "Less Than Perfect") says she has lived with her folks for the past 15 years, and she plans on mining her own life for the show for as long as she can.
For instance, as relates to the lead character's ( Sarah Chalke) dating life: "I would say that being a divorced woman with a child who lives with her parents is not a selling point," Lonow says. "I had a couple guys drive me home and want to come in, and I'm like ... 'Well, I'm going to break this to you now' ... and they kind of ran to the car to get away."
That said, Lonow does see the upside now that she has those years of experience living with her parents for so long.
"First of all, the overhead is low," she jokes. "My stepfather [played by Brad Garrett in the show] will fix everything in the house. If there's a dead rat in the attic, he's happy to go up there and get it."
On a more serious note, though, Lonow says her situation helped her work out a lot of things between her and her parents, and the show will explore that as well as Polly (Chalke) tries to rebuild her life with her daughter Natalie ( Rachel Eggleston).
"Now that I can see how fantastically my daughter turned out and how she benefited from it, I think in hindsight it was a really great decision, even though it wasn't intentional," she says. "It just worked out well."
"How to Live With Your Parents" is set to premiere at midseason on ABC.
