Ian Somerhalder gets dirty and wet for Conde Nast Traveler photo spread

ian-somerhalder-dirty-conde-nast-traveler.jpg "The Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder gets all dirty and wet for a photo spread in the September issue of  Conde Nast Traveler. The magazine honors Somerhalder with its Visionaries 2013 award for environmental activism.

Somerhalder made himself at one with the environment to pose down on the ground, splattered in mud and hosing off an ATV near his childhood home in Lacombe, La. If the back spray from the hose didn't get Somerhalder wet enough, he took to a lake in the next photo to row a red canoe.

Traveler chose Somerhalder for the Visionaries honor because he uses his fame and social media status "to energize a new generation of conservationists." In addition to starting the Ian Somerhalder Foundation in 2010 to help encourage youth to take on environmental projects, the "TVD" star plans to build an environmental center in his hometown. "The ecology here is so raw, so delicate," Somerhalder tells the mag. "I learned young that this place needs to be protected."

Also in Traveler's September issue is "Immortals" star Freida Pinto, who shows off her native india for the cover story. Pinto is honored for her work as an activist for girls' education with NGO Plan International.
