Indie Spirit Award nominations boost 'Silver Linings Playbook,' 'Moonrise Kingdom'

"Silver Linings Playbook" and "Moonrise Kingdom" lead the field with five nominations each. Both are in contention for Best Feature against "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Bernie" and "Keep the Lights On."

As expected, "Silver Linings" stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper earned nominations in the respective Best Female Lead and Best Male Lead categories. Lawrence goes up against Linda Cardellini ("Return"), Emayatzy Corinealdi ("Middle of Nowhere"), Quvenzhané Wallis ("Beasts of the Southern Wild") and Mary Elizabeth Winstead ("Smashed").

While Cooper will vie with five other contenders: Jack Black ("Bernie"), John Hawkes ("The Sessions"), Thure Lindhardt ("Keep the Lights On"), Matthew McConaughey ("Killer Joe") and Wendell Pierce ("Four").

McConaughey also landed a Best Supporting Male nomination for playing a veteran stripper in "Magic Mike." His fellow nominees are David Oyelowo ("Middle of Nowhere"), Michael Pena ("End of Watch"), Sam Rockwell ("Seven Psychopaths") and Bruce Willis ("Moonrise Kingdom").

The Best Supporting Female nominees are Rosemarie DeWitt ("Your Sister's Sister"), Ann Dowd ("Compliance"), Helen Hunt ("The Sessions"), Brit Marling ("Sound of My Voice") and Lorraine Toussaint ("Middle of Nowhere").

"Silver Linings," "Moonrise" and "Keep the Lights On" all earned nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay. They're joined by "Beasts of the Southern Wild" and "The Loneliest Planet" in the directing field, and "Ruby Sparks" and "Seven Psychopaths" in screenplay.

Nominees for best first feature include higher profile indies "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" and "Safety Not Guaranteed" as well as more under the radar titles "Fill the Void," "Gimme the Loot" and "Sound of My Voice."

A full list of nominees is available on the Spirit Awards official site. As always, the contenders have a long time to wait until they find out who won. This year's Spirit Awards are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013. One day before the 2013 Academy Awards.
