Robin Scherbatsky from 'How I Met Your Mother'
Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) may be a gun-loving, cigar-smoking Canadian on the hit CBS series "How I Met Your Mother," but her style is all-American.
"We really try to emulate the girl next door but with a chic, current edge to her," says costume designer Reiko Schoenfeld Kurumada. "She's such a natural beauty we want her to shine through more than anything."
Kurumada often shops for Robin at Rag & Bone, A.L.C., Barneys, Saks Fifth Avenue and Intermix. "And for a little pop of color for the fall I've been doing Stella McCartney," she says.
Kurumada chose four outfits from the new season to illustrate Robin's "very classic, very elegant and timeless style":
1. "The script came out and said, 'Robin in the most gorgeous black gown you've ever seen.' I immediately went to Ralph Lauren Collection because there's nothing more elegant and timeless than Ralph Lauren. Ralph Lauren had this spectacular gown, and I wanted it to be fitted so it showed off her figure, but I wanted it to look like a throwback to Audrey Hepburn and what she would have worn in current day. This dress is perfect for that. We did hardly any jewelry, just simple diamond earrings, and let the dress speak for itself."
2. "This burnt orange blouse is Equipment and I paired it with a brown J Brand skinny twill jean and brown knee-high Chloe boots. I put that outfit together because we were shooting the promos for fall, and I loved the colors. The muted color jean with the classic Equipment silk blouse tucked in the front is a very current look. But also, if you look back 20 years ago, it was current, and it will be 20 years from now. I think the belt was a maroon color, and we did a front tuck just between the two front belt buckles to see the detail of the belt but not get the full effect of the shirt tucked in. The front tuck is the best. I even have Jason Segel (who plays Marshall) doing it. We're making it spread. The age range of the front tuck is very broad. It's unisex. It's a good thing."
3. "This dress is Dolce and Gabbana. It was for the premiere episode of the season when Robin and Barney have a huge dance number at a friend's wedding. The dress called for lots of movement because there was lots of twirling, and we needed to find a dress that still stuck with Robin's character and the simplicity and timelessness going for this season for her, but it needed to be fun and have a princess-y feeling to it. We added straps to it because of the dance number. Again, we did very minimal jewelry because we wanted her to shine."
4. "This gorgeous kelly green top is Stella McCartney. Robin's wearing simple dark J Brand skinny jeans and knee-high black Martin Margiela boots for a scene that's the first time we introduce a new character played by Kal Penn. I chose that top because those gorgeous rich jewel tones look really good on her. And it looked really good on the set because the set was really dark, and it made her pop a little bit."
