Jason Segel talks 'The Five-Year Engagement' weight loss on Letterman

While doing promotion for his second of three big movie releases in 2012, Jason Segel stopped by "The Late Show with David Letterman" April 23 to talk all things "Five-Year Engagement."

Of his new movie, Segel tells Letterman that the studio president forced him to lose "a good 35 pounds" for the movie. "I was told that it had to be conceivable that Emily Blunt would ever choose me to be her husband, which is a fair [statement]," he jokes.

So, how did he do it? "I didn't enjoy it, but they sent a trainer to set and I had to work out twice a day, and then he would watch me all day and monitor my eating."

But Segel got around the diet by sneaking in extra food during scenes, since he plays a chef in the film. "I paid my costars a nominal amount of money to forget their lines," he says, so they'd have to do more eating takes.

The film was a great experience for the actor, considering he also co-wrote the film. "I wrote all these love scenes with Emily Blunt and she shows up and she has to do it, because we're paying her money and it's her job!"
