With the 2014 Winter Olympics taking place in Sochi, Russia, many are divided on their support of the event. A law was passed in June, making it illegal to spread "propaganda for non-traditional sexual relations" to minors in the country, leaving most wondering where the unexpected anti-gay legislature came from.
Meredith Vieira appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" to talk about NBC's coverage of the games and she says there was a lot of internal debate at the network about going, "but at the end of the day it's about the athletes." Still, she also hopes that athletes and attendees alike demonstrate their disapproval for the law.
It's Jay Leno who gets the final word on the controversial laws. "I don't know how it's different from ... I mean, this is how it started in Nazi Germany. 'Oh the Jews, just put them over here'," he says. "It just makes me uncomfortable."
The 2014 Winter Olympics begin February 7.
