Jay-Z brings Rihanna and Kanye West to 'The Jay Leno Show'
Musical guests won't necessarily be as big a part of "The Jay Leno Show" as they were on Leno's "Tonight Show" -- but three pretty big names will at least help kick the show off in September.
NBC says Jay-Z will perform with Rihanna and Kanye West on the premiere of "The Jay Leno Show" Monday, Sept. 14. They'll perform the single "Run This Town" from Jay-Z's album "The Blueprint 3," which goes on sale a few days before the "Leno" appearance.
Both Leno and Rick Ludwin, the NBC executive overseeing Leno's prime-time show, said earlier this week that "The Jay Leno Show" will place less emphasis on live music than "The Tonight Show" and other late-night shows typically do. Ludwin said that music would likely figure into the show twice a week, saying the show wanted to keep the spotlight on comedy most nights.
"I'll tell you a little secret to doing television," Leno said during his time with critics. "What music gets you is a great studio audience. Music doesn't necessarily get you a great television audience because, if you want to see U2, I can go to VH1, I can go to the Internet, [go to] YouTube, and see any U2 concert at any time that I want to see. ... Now, you can see any music group when you want anytime."
We're going to go ahead and assume that won't be how NBC promotes the show.
