Jennifer Lawrence quotes 'First Wives Club,' Lindsay Lohan doesn't like it

jennifer-lawrence-globe-i-beat-meryl.jpgWhen Jennifer Lawrence accepted her Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her work in "Silver Linings Playbook," she took the stage and joked, "It says, 'I beat Meryl!'" Which was true -- also nominated for the award was the legendary Meryl Streep, for her movie "Hope Springs."

That said, Lawrence wasn't actually taunting Streep (who, by the way, has an excellent sense of humor about herself). She was quoting Bette Midler's character in "First Wives Club." Unfortunately, Lindsay Lohan, who was at home live-tweeting the awards show, didn't quite get the joke.

"no1 should ever mess with a legend, such as Meryl Streep," Lohan tweeted.

Sigh. Lawrence took the opportunity to clear the air on Tuesday's episode of "The Late Show" with David Letterman. "It was a quote from 'First Wives Club'! Bette Midler was talking about a Globe. I can't believe nobody's ever done it before!" Lawrence said. "She says 'Look what it says! It says I beat Meryl!' and it was so perfect and I said it and I had no idea Lindsay Lohan would take to the Twitterverse ... Twitter is very upset."

"First of all, it's Meryl Streep! You can't offend Meryl Streep!" Lawrence said -- though she hasn't actually heard from Streep, who couldn't attend Sunday's show because she had the flu. "I'm don't know if I want to. I'm nervous. ... I wanted to make a public statement, like 'Hey idiots. It's a quote from a movie.'"
