Jimmy Kimmel in tsunami zone: 'Unevacuated,' 'it was scary'

jimmy-kimmel-abc.jpgA devastating earthquake and tsunami hit Japan early Friday morning (March 11) U.S. time. The images and video are horrifying, but largely removed from the United States. But through Jimmy Kimmel, the entertainment industry has a small connection to the tragedy.

Kimmel is currently vacationing in the French Polynesian islands, which are located approximately 6000 miles ESE of Japan and 2600 miles south of Hawaii. He began tweeting when the earthquake hit, saying that on a scale of 1-10, his scared level was at " a good solid 7" and then that the island was being evacuated.

Kimmel then dropped off Twitter for roughly six hours. He is now back and says, "
We are back, officially 'unevacuated'. Thanks for your kind words. It was scary. Best wishes to our friends in Japan and all affected."

He adds:

  • Again, thanks for the prayers, kind words, and concern. I feel a little bit like Tom Sawyer watching his own funeral.
  • great question. Went from the former to the latter very quickly. Back at the hotel now RT @buddyponderosa real scary or rich people scary?

We're glad Jimmy is safe and sound and all our thoughts and prayers go out to the millions of people affected by this natural disaster.
