joan-rivers-medical-coma-hospital-update.jpgJoan Rivers remains on life support at a New York City Hospital after a complication during throat surgery caused her to stop breathing, but the comedian's team of doctors have begun to wake her up from her medically induced coma and her family is keeping their "fingers crossed."

A source tells the New York Daily News that doctors began lifting Rivers from her coma on Sunday (Aug. 31) and were waiting to find out how the 81-year-old would respond.

"The waking-up process has begun and will take until Tuesday," a source tells the paper. "There is real concern that the part of the brain that controls motor skills may have been compromised, leaving her as either a vegetable or in a wheelchair."

Melissa Rivers thanked fans for their outpouring of support for her mother. "We are keeping our fingers crossed," she says in a statement Sunday. "Everyone keep [the "Fashion Police" star] in your thoughts and prayers."
