The buzz-worthy awards contender grossed $242,127 from five theaters for a remarkable $48,425 per-screen average. If its numbers hold, it's on track to break the opening art-house records set by Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," which averaged $130,749 per screen in its first weekend.

"Resident Evil: Retribution," the sequel in the Mila Jovovich horror franchise, topped the Friday box office overall with $8.4 million and is expected gross over $22 million for the weekend.

"Finding Nemo," Disney's 3D release of the Pixar blockbuster, nabbed the No. 2 spot with $5.1 million.

"The Possession," which topped last week's weak box office, dropped to third with $6 million, followed by the Shia LaBeouf western "Lawless" ($4.5) and "The Expendables 2" ($3 million).
