Joel McHale's picks for the Film Independent Spirit Awards: 'Black Swan,' 'Exit Through the Gift Shop'

joel-mchale-gi.jpgBefore Hollywood eyes the Oscars on Sunday night (Feb. 27), Film Independent will be honoring the best and the brightest indie darlings of 2010.

Joel McHale hosts the Spirit Awards on Saturday and Zap2it caught up with the "Community" star to get the dirt on what movies he's hoping will take home some hardware.

As host, McHale started his research by, well... watching the movies.

"It's pleasurable work," he tells us. "My wife was very happy about it too. It was just finding the time between 'Community' and -- my children -- which is the most important. And 'The Soup.' So it's been busy but a great type of busy."

As for the movies he's pulling for, there are three that stood out.

"I loved 'Exit Through the Gift Shop,'" he admits. "And I loved 'Restrepo' and after I saw [it] I was like, 'Why wasn't this bigger?'... Gosh that documentary was crazy, I mean it was amazing."

The most surprising film he came across has been garnering plenty of attention all on its own.

"I was surprised by 'Black Swan,'" he says. "Before seeing it I was just like, 'Oh, it's kind of a chick movie' but after watching it I just loved it. I was just enthralled by it. I was not expecting it to be so dark, it was great."

Adding, " Natalie Portman's performance was incredible."

We can't imagine the Darren Aronofsky thriller will go home from either award night empty handed, but we'll be watching to see if McHale's other picks take the prize.

You can watch McHale host the Saturday award show, and snag some titles to add to your Netflix queue, on IFC at 10 PM EST.
