Johnny Depp on marriage, Angelina Jolie's 'perverse sense of humor'

If you didn't know better, you might assume that Johnny Depp and longtime love Vanessa Paradis were already married. Though they've been an item for 12 years and have two children together, the two don't see a necessity in making their union official.

"I never found myself needing that piece of paper," Depp tells "Extra." "Marriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart. You don't need somebody to say, OK, you're married."

Another reason Depp's avoiding the aisle? His girlfriend's last name.

"If Vanessa wanted to get hitched, why not," he says. "But the thing is, I'd be so scared of ruining her last name. She's got such a good last name."

It's true -- "Vanessa Depp" doesn't have quite the same ring to it as "Vanessa Paradis," which is pronounced like "parody". Only with a French accent, of course. We're not suggesting Johnny put a ring on it or anything, but there are plenty of women these days getting married while retaining their last name. Just saying. It is an option.

Depp also gushed about his "The Tourist" co-star Angelina Jolie and how pleased he was to find that she's just "a regular gal... with a perverse sense of humor."

"She doesn't mind traveling to the dark or to the very weird," he says of Jolie.

We don't know where he's been, but we figured out how "weird" Jolie can be circa the late 1990s.

You can see Depp and Jolie in "The Tourist" when it hits the big screen Dec. 10.
