Everyone has that awkward phase in life. For most of us, it comes in the pre-teen years. For Jon Hamm, it may have happened in his mid-20s.

Behold this video of the "Mad Men" star from a 1990s USA Network show called "The Big Date." Hamm is introduced as a 25-year-old waiter, which puts the show in 1996. He had moved to L.A. full-time in 1995 and was trying to break into the business; his first on-screen role came on an episode of "Ally McBeal" in 1997.

On "The Big Date," Hamm sports a quintessentially mid-'90s haircut -- call it the Jordan Catalano -- along with pleated khakis and a billowy, rayon-looking shirt that basically every 25-year-old guy had seven of at the time.

Hamm, alas, does not get a chance at going on a Big Date with any of the women on the show, as his surfer-bud description of a great first date -- "some fabulous food, a little fabulous conversation [and] end it with a fabulous foot massage for an evening of total fabulosity" -- did not entice any of the women on the show to choose him.

He had honed his game sufficiently by the following year to impress Jennifer Westfeldt; they've been together ever since.
