Jordin Sparks 'Sparkle's on red carpet after weight loss

Sparks tells "Today" it all started with a bout of illness in 2010, which caused her to reexamine her lifestyle and eating habits.

"I got really sick in the fall of 2010 right after Broadway. And I was just like, I am not going to take my health for granted anymore. This changes right here, right now," says Sparks. "I was really evaluating what I was eating, when, and why I was eating it. I love food and so I was just eating because it tasted good. I kind of re-evaluated that. Now I definitely listen to my body first."

"I just took baby steps because I was so fatigued from what I was sick with," Sparks continues. "Just doing baby steps and getting more into physical activity and then eventually I found a trainer. And I've just been trying to keep it up. It's a day by day thing. It's been a year and a half and I feel good."

At the Tuesday (Aug. 14) premiere of "Sparkle" in New York City, the 22-year-old looked positively radiant on the red carpet in a fiery red dress. Also in attendance were her "Sparkle" co-stars Omari Hardwick, Mike Epps, Debra Martin Chase, Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter and Derek Luke (below).

"Sparkle" opens nationwide Friday, Aug. 17.
