Joss Whedon has signed on to write and direct the sequel, Disney announced Tuesday (Aug. 7) on a conference call with investors, according to /Film. Additionally, Whedon will be "involved in" a TV series project set in the Marvel universe.

Whedon had previously expressed some ambivalence about doing an "Avengers" sequel, saying he was "torn" about "telling what is ultimately someone else's story."

"But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool," he added.

Not much is known about the series project, although it's unlikely to include the A-list superheroes of "The Avengers." Word of its development got out only a couple of weeks ago, and it hasn't really progressed past they "Hey, let's do this" stage. Similarly, there's no good information on how deeply involved Whedon would be in its development.

"The Avengers" sequel is being targeted for release in the summer of 2015.
