Joss Whedon's 'Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D.' pilot adds Ming-Na Wen to 'Avengers' universe

ming-na-wen-laff-2012-gi.jpg Ming-Na Wen will join Clark Gregg in Joss Whedon's ABC adventure pilot "Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D." set in the same universe as the blockbuster "Avengers" and "Iron Man" film series.

While Gregg reprises his role as Agent Phil Coulson from the Marvel films (despite the fact that -- spoiler alert! -- Coulson heroically sacrificed his life in "The Avengers"), Ming-Na takes on the freshly conceived role of Agent Melinda May. She's a combat veteran, ace pilot and weapons expert who still harbors psychological scars from her experiences in battle.

In the casting breakdown which revealed five key characters planned for the series, the role was named Althea Rice. Neither Rice nor May exists in Marvel's comic book universe. Additional details on the pilot remain under wraps.

We do know Whedon will direct and co-write with his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, and we can't wait to see how this shapes up.

Ming-Na's previous credits include "ER," "Stargate Universe" and "Eureka" on the small screen, as well as "The Joy Luck Club," "Street Fighter" and the voice of Disney heroine "Mulan" on the big screen.
