Julia Roberts and Mark Ruffalo will star in the film, which will air in 2014. "Glee" and "American Horror Story" creator Ryan Murphy will direct in his first project for HBO. Kramer will write the script.

"We are so proud to be involved with this monumental project," says Michael Lombardo, president of HBO Programming. "Ryan has assembled an extraordinary cast to bring Larry Kramer's landmark theatrical achievement to the screen for the first time."

"The Normal Heart" is set in the early days of the AIDS crisis in New York. Roberts plays Dr. Emma Brookner, who treats some of the early patients. Ruffalo is Ned Weeks, who sees his friends start to die and wants to find out what's happening.

Matt Bomer ("White Collar") also stars as a reporter who becomes Ned's lover.

Murphy will also executive produce the movie, along with his producing partner Dante Di Loreto, Jason Blum ("Paranormal Activity," "The Reader") and Dede Gardner ("Eat Pray Love").
