Karen Gillan shaved head: Why 'Guardians of the Galaxy' made her go bald
Karen's Gillan's shaved head at San Diego Comic-Con was almost as big a reveal as the fact "The Avengers 2" will be called "Avengers: Age of Ultron." The former "Doctor Who" actress whipped of her red wig during the Marvel Studios panel to reveal she had gone bald for the character of Nebula, showing an impressive dedication to her craft.
Though she later said on the "Guardians of the Galaxy" press line that it was hard to part with her red locks, losing her hair for Nebula seems like the right choice. Though clearly Nebula is supposed to be bald, fans who Google pictures of Nebula likely notice that she's seen with a full head of black hair. So what's the deal? In the Marvel comics, Nebula originally has hair but later is bald, so it seems as though that's the version of the character director James Gunn is sticking with. Who knows, maybe she'll even make an appearance with her black 'do in the film as well.
Nebula is a space pirate who claims she is the granddaughter of Thanos, who was seen briefly at the end of "The Avengers." The mastermind villain behind the Battle of New York is already confirmed to be a part of "Guardians of the Galaxy," so it seems as though Nebula's storyline will be entangled with his in this film as well as the comics. At least Gillan seems pretty okay with her new look, though she told the gathered crowd at the Comic-Con panel that she was "worried I would look like an overgrown fetus."
Gillan isn't the only "Guardians of the Galaxy" star who made a big physical transformation for the role. Chris Pratt slimmed down and toned up to play Star-Lord.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" is due in theaters on Aug. 1, 2014.
