Kate Middleton chooses her charities, gears up for 30th birthday

kate-middleton-garterday.jpgNow that Kate Middleton has been a royal spouse for the better part of a year, she's following a family tradition and choosing charities to support. On Thursday (Jan. 5), the Duchess of Cambridge's favored charitable organizations were named.

Middleton will become a patron of Action on Addiction. The British charity supports research, prevention and treatment of addiction and provides support for the families of addicts. The choice, notes the Los Angeles Times, is reminiscent of Princess Diana's decision to champion HIV/AIDS-related causes.

The duchess also picked charities in line with her interest in the arts, including the National Portrait Gallery and The Art Room, a childrens' art therapy program. She also announced she would become a patron of East Anglia's Children's Hospices, which provides care to children with life-threatening illnesses.

"I can't say why she's chosen us, but I'm delighted she has," says Graham Butland, chief executive of the hospice.

Middleton chose each charity after visiting them privately in November.

On Monday, Middleton will celebrate her 30th birthday. Husband Prince William also hits that milestone birthday later this year.
