Kate Middleton hospital nurse Jacintha Saldanha funeral held
The U.K.'s Telegraph reports that Saldanha was remembered by a crowd of more than 2,000 who gathered at Our Lady of Health Catholic Church in her native Shirva on Monday (Dec. 17). Saldanha left instructions for her funeral in one of three suicide notes she wrote before hanging herself Dec. 7.
The 46-year-old nurse at London's King Edward VII Hospital answered a call from Sydney-based DJs Michael Christian and Mel Greig posing as the Queen and Prince Charles. A pregnant Kate Middleton was there receiving treatment for acute morning sickness. Saldanha, believing she was speaking to the royals, handed the phone off to a colleague who updated the DJs on Middleton's condition.
Christian and Greig have publicly apologized for the prank, calling themselves "shattered, gutted, heartbroken" over Saldanha's death.
Saldanha is survived by husband Ben Barboza and two children, Junal, 17, and Lisha, 14.
Most Reverend Dr. Gerald Lobo remembers the wife and mother at the service, saying, "Jacintha Saldhana spent her entire life looking after people who were sick and today it is our turn to show our appreciation of her work and her life."
