The "Smash" alum has landed the female lead in CBS' genius drama pilot "Scorpion," THR reports. Based on the life of Walter O'Brien, the project revolves around Walter (Elyes Gabel, "Body of Proof"), an eccentric genius and his international network of super-geniuses who protect against the complex threats of the modern age.

McPhee will star as Paige, a diner waitress and "genius whisperer" of sorts who looks after and translates for Walter's team of socially misunderstood brainiacs.

The role marks the "American Idol" runner-up's first return to series television following her two-season stint on NBC's Broadway drama 'Smash."

"Scorpion" is written by Nack Santora and Nicholas Wootton ("Golden Boy"), who will executive produce alongside Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Justin Lin. Lin will also direct the pilot.
