Kathie Lee Gifford pulls an Elisabeth Hasselbeck with Martin Short

martin-short-today.jpgOn Wednesday (May 30), Martin Short dropped by the fourth hour of "Today" to trade funnies with hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford. The interview was going swimmingly until Kathie Lee brought up Short's wife, Nancy.

"He and Nancy have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business," says Gifford. "How many years now for you guys?"

FYI, Nancy died in 2010.

Short replies, "Umm... 36 years."

Still clueless, Gifford powers on, asking, "But you're still in love?"

"Madly in love," he agrees.

"Why?!" Gifford continued.

Short tersely replies, "I'm cute."

Gifford, of course, later found out her error and tweeted this apology to him: "I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I'm so grateful."

In May 2011, "The View's" Elisabeth Hasselbeck made the same mistake when she asked Stanley Tucci -- whose wife had recently died -- if she'd seen his latest film, "The Lovely Bones."

Who's to blame? Hasselbeck and Gifford -- or their producers, who likely fed them bum background information?
