Kirk Cameron calls Todd Akin 'a good man' on 'Today'Add to Favorites | Growing Pains
The former child actor turned conservative Christian controversy magnet said on "Today" this morning (Aug. 21) that despite the Missouri GOP Senate candidate's inflammatory comments about abortion and rape --that few victims conceive because women's bodies can naturally prevent pregnancies in cases of "legitimate rape" -- he believes Akin is a "good man."
"I'm not his political strategist, thank God," Cameron told hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. "This is a man who is advocating the sanctity of life through and through. He said he misspoke, and he apologized for it. I like to evaluate people based on their entire life, their entire career, all they stand for."
"I believe he's a good man," Cameron added. "He's now in a very, very difficult spot."
The actor recently took heat in Hollywood -- including from his former "Growing Pains" costar Tracey Gold -- for his condemnation of homosexuality as " unnatural, detrimental and ultimately destructive to foundations of civilization."
