Kristen Wiig's 'Sound of Music' 'Saturday Night Live' cold open wasn't planned

When Kristen Wiig surprised the audience during Paul Rudd's "Saturday Night Live" episode a few weeks back, she did it by crashing the "Sound of Music Live and Condensed!" cold open with her fan-favorite character, Dooneese. And according to Wiig, she wasn't even supposed to be in the sketch in the first place.

"I went [to "Saturday Night Live"] just to say hi to Lorne [Michaels]," Wiig said on "Late Show With David Letterman" on Friday (Dec. 20). "I went upstairs and they were talking aobut the cold open. The next thing I knew I was in it."

Wiig confessed that she misses being on the NBC sketch comedy show every week. "I do miss it. But [returning now,] there's more pressure," Wiig says. "You don't want to come back and have people go, 'I'm glad she's gone.'"
