Lady Gaga is a 'slut' and 'glorifying drug use' says Staten Island Borough President James P. Molinaro

lady-gaga-anorexia-bulimia-pot-slut-glorifying-drug-use.jpgIn case women's sexuality hasn't been attacked by politicians enough in the media lately, Staten Island borough president James P. Molinaro is adding his voice to the despicable chorus, For those who don't know, the Borough President is an elected official in NYC. Currently, four out of the five New York BPs are Democrats. Molinaro, the fifth, is a Republican -- and he's decided to spend some of his very valuable time condemning proud New Yorker Lady Gaga.

At the kickoff of his anti-drug abuse program, Molinaro showed a poster-sized photo of Gaga smoking marijuana on stage in Amsterdam (where it is legal). "We have to understand that there's a tremendous influence with our youth, which I didn't have as a youth," Molinaro said. "And there's the influence right there. Stop glorifying the drug use. There's Gaga. Here's this ... this ... I would call her a slut. This slut is influencing many, many children."

We'll leave the "if you don't want Lady Gaga influencing your children then don't send your children to a Lady Gaga concert in Amsterdam" rant for another day. Not only does Molinaro not have any jurisdiction as to what Gaga does when she's in another country (and following that country's laws), but we're not entirely sure what drug use has to do with being a "slut."

"Looking up the word 'slut' to see if it was properly used before I used it, it said 'improper conduct,'" Molinaro told the NY Times. "Now, isn't it improper for someone who is so high profile to be smoking reefer in front of children? I have grandnieces that idolize her - 12 and 13 years old - and it's ridiculous. You see these young girls walking around on Halloween with her outfit on."

The definition that Molinaro is referring to is from the Random House dictionary, which notes that in the 15th century, the word was used to describe "a woman given to immoral or improper conduct." In this century (as in the century in which Molinaro is an elected official) the definition refers specifically to sexual promiscuity -- the word "prostitute" is used in the same dictionary definition that Molinaro apparently consulted to find out how to use the word when he time-travels back to the 15th century.

james-p-molinaro.jpgFor the record: Gaga has been in a monogamous relationship with actor Taylor Kinney for over a year. But hey, old white republican man, it's totally your business to make assumptions and declarations about her private life to people who speak your15th century version English.

At her recent performance in Amsterdam, Gaga did indeed light up on stage. "I want you to know it has totally changed my life and I've really cut down on drinking. It has been a totally spiritual experience for me with my music," she says of smoking.

Molinaro's war on drugs comes from a good place -- he lost his son to an overdose in 2006. But his war on Lady Gaga and his choice of words only serve to make him look like he's stuck in the 15th century -- and to perpetuate misogyny and flagrant slut-shaming (Here's a definition, Mr. Molinaro, since you're so into those).

Also of note? While Molinaro was calling Gaga a "slut," she was bravely revealing her ongoing struggle with anorexia and bulimia and offering support to young men and women who might be experiencing the same devastating body issues. So, you know... hideous influence, that woman, who fights for self-esteem and civil rights and art education. Just really awful.
