Lauren Scruggs: Gabby Douglas 'is a real inspiration to me'

"It's just good to be out in public just as I am and letting people know that I'm doing OK," Scruggs, 24, tells Savannah Guthrie on Thursday's (Aug. 9) "Today" show on location in London's Olympic Village.

Of her trip to the Olympics, Scruggs says she gets strength from the athletes and their perseverance at the 2012 Summer Games -- particularly gold-medal American gymnast Gabby Douglas, who surprised Scruggs with a hug on camera during her interview.

"Gabby is a real inspiration to me," Scruggs says. "Her spirit is so sweet and how she professes her faith."

On Dec. 3 at an airport in McKinney, Texas, Scruggs accidentally walked into a spinning airplane propeller while climbing out of a small plane. She has since been fitted for prosthetics and says she's happy to have been off her pain medications since January. Her book "Still Lolo," out this fall, will expound upon her experience of healing, but for now she says, "I've gained a new perspective on life."
