Leah Remini leaving Church of Scientology after interrogations - report
The Church of Scientology just lost one of its biggest celebrity supporters, according to new reports. "King of Queens" and "Saved By the Bell" alum Leah Remini is said to have left the religion over years of interrogations that began after an incident at Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' wedding.
Tony Ortega writes that Remini wrote a "Knowledge Report" about Scientology leader David Miscavige after he snapped at her at Cruise's wedding. She had simply -- albeit loudly -- asked where his wife Shelly Miscavige was at the Nov. 2006 event. Miscavige has reportedly only been publicly seen once in the years since, and many believe she is intentionally being kept away from the public. Miscavige's response was to tell her Remini wasn't of high enough rank to know the answer.
After Remini submitted her report, she reportedly was submitted to "thought modification" and interrogations known as "security checking" and "Truth Rundown," which ultimately tried to convince her that it was the evil inside her that made her speak out against Miscavige. She reportedly was not pleased with how she was treated, despite continuing to be a vocal supporter of the Church in the years since.
However, her biggest break with Scientology came in 2011 when she tweeted her support of another Church defector, director Paul Haggis, who publicly denounced Tommy Davis for lying about Scientology's disconnection policy and its anti-gay political stance. Now that Remini has officially defected (according to reports), she is expected to make some sort of statement. Her family, also Scientologists, are said to stand by her despite the Church's disconnection policy.
Update: A representative for The Church of Scientology contacted Zap2it with the following statement: "In relation to Ms. Remini: The Church respects the privacy of parishioners and has no further comment."
Remini has now made public comment herself, issuing the following statement: "I wish to share my sincere and heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming positive response I have received from the media, my colleagues, and from fans around the world. I am truly grateful and thankful for all your support."
