robert-taylor-longmire-amc-325.jpgA&E has picked up a second season of its western drama "Longmire," Deadline has confirmed. Only four episodes have aired, but the Robert Taylor and Katee Sackhoff-led series has gotten off to a great start in the ratings. With 4.1 million viewers tuning in for the debut, "Longmire" had A&E's most-watched scripted series debut ever.

Subsequent episodes have averaged 3.9 million live viewers, which certainly is nothing to sneeze at. The show is still in production on its first season, so the early pickup is a clear vote of confidence from the network.

"Longmire" is based on mystery novels written by Craig Johnson, who tells Zap2it that though it's been bizarre for him to see his work come to life on-screen, he's thrilled with Taylor's work. "I think they did the right thing [casting him], because you look at Robert, and you get this feeling that you've seen him somewhere before," Johnson said. "It's that fresh quality, that unknown quality that they were looking for, but he still settles right into the character just like a well-worn glove. He does a magnificent job."
