'Looking' premiere: What did you think of HBO's new gay series?
That's what they got on Sunday (Jan. 19) when "Looking" premiered on HBO, introducing us to Patrick ( Jonathan Groff), Augustin ( Frankie J. Alvarez) and Dom ( Murray Bartlett), each at different stations in life.
Patrick, a hopeless single, spends the premiere cruising in the park, going on a terrible OK Cupid date with a pretentious doctor, and attending his ex-boyfriend's joint bachelor party. Augustin, his roommate, meanwhile, decides to move across the Bay and shack up with his boyfriend Frank ( O-T Fagbenle). And then there's Dom, a 40-year-old stuck as working as a waiter, who seems to be struggling with where's his life has taken him.
The show is immediately, infinitely relatable. Each main character finds themselves in situations that feel ripped from the viewer's own private lives. The awkward dates, run-ins with exes, struggles with settling down, looking back at life with regret -- it's all familiar. And the way the show presents itself, with a natural approach, only serves to make the premiere feel more lived in.
We're hooked -- but what about you? Will you be tuning in to "Looking" next week? Sound off in the comments below.
