louis-ck-oh-my-god-hbo.jpgWhen FX announced its show "Louie" was taking a longer than usual hiatus between its third and fourth seasons, creator/star/everything Louis C.K. said, "I don't want it to be making the doughnuts.

"I want it to keep being something that comes from somewhere fun and important, and I want it to stay funny," he said at the time.

"Louie" is likely to be back on the air in about a year, and in the meantime C.K. is out doing something he does better than just about anyone on the planet right now: stand-up comedy.

C.K.'s new special for HBO, "Oh My God," aired Saturday (April 13), and he is at the top of his game. The hour-long special, taped over two nights in Phoenix in February, is a focused, well-honed and hilarious piece of work. C.K. touches on death, the wonder that humans are at the top of the food chain, why he's happy to be divorced and getting older.

Among the best bits: An early story about how a fellow resident of his "nice" building in New York questioned whether a disheveled C.K. actually lives there; the entirety of the food-chain riff, which starts the line "It must suck to be other stuff"; and a rumination on dating and the courage it takes to go out on one, especially for women.

It's a shame that "Louie" won't be back on the air until 2014, but if C.K. can produce a show that's executed nearly as well as "Oh My God" is, it will be well worth the wait.

What did you think of "Oh My God"? What were your favorite bits?
