tea-leoni-madam-secretary-teaser-cbs.jpgThe premise of CBS' new drama "Madam Secretary" may be a bit of a reach: After the U.S. secretary of state dies, a former CIA analyst-turned-college professor (Tea Leoni) is picked to be his successor based mostly on her friendship with the president, her former boss.

But this (rather long) teaser, and a great cast that also includes Bebe Neuwirth, Tim Daly, Geoffrey Arend and Keith Carradine as the president, does a pretty good job selling it. Leoni is doing her first TV series since the late '90s, and she sells the role of a very smart but not especially diplomatic person (a potential problem, since the State Department's job is diplomacy) very well.

Barbara Hall ("Joan of Arcadia," "Homeland") created "Madam Secretary," which will air at 8 p.m. ET/PT Sundays in the fall. Take a look at the trailer:
