Will Ferrell is making a 'Manimal' movie, not a moment too soon
Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are teaming up with producer Jimmy Miller to produce a live-action/animated feature film based on the 1983 series about a doctor (Simon MacCorkindale) who could transform into several different animals, Deadline reports. The show's co-creator, Glen A. Larson, is also involved.
"Manimal" lasted only eight episodes on NBC, but pop-culture nerds of a certain age (Ferrell and McKay, for instance) have a warm place in their hearts for the show about Dr. Jonathan Chase, who was "master of the secrets that divide man from animal, animal from man."
"Like 'The Catcher in the Rye' or 'The Sound and the Fury,' 'Manimal' has always been one of those elusive projects every producer dreams of taking to the silver screen," McKay tells Deadline. "I know the movie will be funny and entertaining, but will it be the first film to win a Pulitzer? We'll just have to see."
The movie, which Jay Martel and Ian Roberts ("Key & Peele") are writing, will lean into the strangeness of the premise and be an action-comedy with heavy visual effects. A release date hasn't been set but can't come soon enough.
