Maria Franziska von Trapp, the last surviving member of the family that inspired "The Sound of Music," has died. She was 99 years old. Along with her six siblings, father and stepmother, she formed a group called the Trapp Family Singers.
Their story of fleeing Austria upon the Nazi annexation of the country was used as the plot "The Sound of Music" staged musical and movie, making the von Trapp family name more famous than one could possibly imagine. The film went on to win five Academy Awards, while the musical was recently staged live on NBC.
According to the Daily Mail, von Trapp died peacefully in her Stowe, Vt. home, the same town her family settled in when they arrived in the United States in 1942.
